Europa's grootste LNG-terminal ontvangt eerste schip

LONDEN (Energeia) - Europa's grootste LNG-terminal is 'open for business'. Vrijdag ontving de South Hook terminal de LNG-tanker Tempek in de Milford Haven in het Britse South Wales. Aan boord naar verluidt ruim 211.000 kubieke meter vloeibaar gemaakt aardgas uit Qatar, dat de Britse gasprijs verder onder druk zal zetten. South Hook is een partnerschap tussen drie bedrijven: 67,5% is in handen van Qatar Petroleum, 24,15% is in eigendom van het Amerikaanse Exxon Mobil en 8,35% is in bezit van het Franse Total.
South Hook verwacht op jaarbasis in de eerste fase 10,5 mrd kubieke meter gas te ontvangen. In 2012 moet die capaciteit zijn verdubbeld. Van de vijf enorme opslagtanks zijn er nu drie klaar voor de ontvangst van gas.
Zo'n eerste levering wordt gebruikt om met het gas uit de Tempek-tanker de instrumenten, leidingen en tanks in de terminal te koelen tot gebruikstemperatuur. LNG-gas heeft een temperatuur van een goede min 160°C.
Naar verwachting zal het eerste gas uit de South Hook terminal over een week of drie het Britse net in kunnen. Daarvoor is volgens persbureau Bloomberg een 316 kilometer lange en ruim EUR 1 mrd dure pijpleiding gebouwd vanaf Milford Haven naar het nationale hoge druk net.
Daarvan profiteert ook de Dragon terminal, een op een steenworp afstand gelegen nog in aanbouw zijnde LNG-terminal van BG Group. Deze terminal, net als South Hook twee jaar vertraagd, wordt in het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar in gebruik genomen. De jaarlijkse capaciteit van de Dragon terminal is ruim 16 mrd kuub.

The world could soon face a severe LNG supply crunch, as demand rebounds following the economic crisis and if more production plants are not built soon.
New plants under construction, together with lower demand growth, should ensure there will be plenty of fuel for a while - giving some respite from the high prices of the tight market in recent years, delegates told the CWC World LNG Summit in Barcelona.
A lack of investment in any new capital-intensive facilities amid uncertainty over demand and financing problems, could threaten an even tighter market for the super-cooled gas later, according to reports.
“The lack of final investment decisions on new supply projects since most of these new projects were conceptualised is probably setting the industry up for a very tough supply crunch in the middle of the next decade,” Elizabeth Spomer of BG Group is quoted as having said.
Most speakers at the annual conference apparently agreed there would most likely be a lull in demand for the fuel, used to fire an increasing number of the world’s power stations and as a raw material for some industries because of the economic downturn. |
